Origin Energy Confirms Data Breach Affecting Customers

Origin Energy, one of Australia’s largest electricity and gas retailers, has confirmed that customer data was stolen in a breach and says it’s working with federal authorities and independent cyber experts to investigate.

The company initially disclosed a possible incident after a hacker claimed to possess sample records, but later acknowledged that customer information had been compromised and that it’s still determining how many people were affected.

The stolen data may include account details, names, addresses, dates of birth, and partial financial information such as the last four digits of credit cards and the last three digits of bank account numbers. CEO Frank Calabria apologized, saying the company’s priority is securing its systems and preventing further unauthorized access while the investigation continues.

The breach follows another major incident in Australia’s healthcare sector, where Partnered Health confirmed that patients at more than 20 clinics may have had sensitive medical records stolen in a cyberattack.
